March 2016 - Spoken Words & Thanksgiving

Kid's Memory Verses
Proverbs 18:21 (NCV) - What you say can mean life or death. Those who speak with care will be rewarded.
I Thessalonians 5:18 (NKJV) - In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Adult Memory Verses

Ephesians 4:29, 30 (NIV) - Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Phil 4:4-8 (NKJV) - Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things.

Arts & Crafts
#1 - Get a manila envelope and decorate it with your kids. Use pieces of note paper to have them write or draw pictures of the things that they are thankful for throughout the day. At the end of the week or month, review what's in the envelope and celebrate with God his goodness to us!

Bible Readings
#1 - Read a Proverb a day and copy each verse that talks about our words or giving thanks
#2 - Read the creation story in Genesis and make note of every use of the phrase "God said" - What does God talk about?
#3 - The Ten Lepers - Luke 17 - Use the "Simply the Story" link to study
#4 - Meditate on Romans 10:9
#5 - Psalm 55:21 - What words do I use that are like this? (Flattery)
#6 - GWO! Scripture List

Prayer Points
#1 - For our family to understand the power of our words and cultivate a heart of thanksgiving
#2 - Daily Prayers to use my words wisely
#3 -

Service Project
#1 - Talk with your family about the things you are thankful for. Find a way to do or give that to someone who needs it. (Examples: food, toys, friendship, the Word)
#2 - In the morning, make a list of 2-3 people that you and your kids want to intentionally speak words of life over that day - it could be each other, friends, family, teachers, etc.

Games & Activities
#1 - Rice Experiment
Cook white rice per the instructions. Using three identical containers, label one "life & blessing" and one "death & cursing." Don't label the third container and just ignore it for the month. Each day speak words of love and life or words of hate and death over each container. Watch the decay that happens over the course of the month to see the power your words have over our physical environment. - YouTube Video
#2 - Pennies in Your Pocket
Have you and your kids start the day with ten pennies in your pocket. Each time you catch yourself, or someone else catches you, speaking negative words, move a penny from that pocket to the other one. You will soon realize how often we all speak words of death. At the end of the night put all the pennies on the dresser and start fresh the next day because "His mercies are new every morning."
#3 - Thanksgiving Journal
Have a family journal for each person to write what they're thankful for. Try to write a different thing each day.
#4 - Luke 17:11-19 - Using dolls, legos, army men, or whatever you have, re-enact this story with your kids. Ask lots of questions - Why didn't the other men come back? What does his thankfulness show about his heart? What did Jesus mean by saying this man had been "made whole"?
