February 2016 - IDENTITIY

Kid's Memory Verses
Phil 4:13 (NCV) - I can do all things through Christ, because he gives me strength.
Eph 2:10 (NLT) - For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Adult Memory Verses

Romans 8:16-17 (NIV) - The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs - heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
2 Cor 5:17, 20-21 (NKJV) - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.... Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Arts & Crafts

#1 - Genesis 1:27 - Trace your kid's hands on paper. Write their name on each hand. Talk about how this is not their actual hand but a copy, a drawing. We are made in God's image - a copy or drawing of Him, with his characteristics. Ask how we resemble God, since he doesn't have a physical body: we both think, have emotions, have a will, etc. Because we are made in God's image, we belong to Him (Mt 22:15-22)

#2 - Get butcher paper or newsprint. Have your child lay down and draw their outline on the paper. Then have them draw in their face, hair, clothes, etc. Talk about and affirm their unique qualities and how God made them. Read Jer 1:5

#3 - Create a nametag for yourself (and have kids do it for themselves). Reflect your unique likes and personality in the colors, pictures, font, stickers, etc. Put it on your door or wall to identify you or "your space."

Prayer Points
#1 - For teenagers and young adults in our community to have a strong sense of their identity as God sees them

#2 - For our "corporate identity" - what does God want for our churches, small groups and families?

Service Project

#1 - Get blank notecards and write special messages to give to friends, family, acquaintances or strangers. Write on them "You are _______." Have your kids decide what to write and who to give them to. Help them think about people who need appreciation or encouragement. Keep one or two in your bag or car and have your kids pray about who needs that encouragement. For example, write a card that says "You are loved by God" and take it to the grocery store with you. Have your kids ask the Holy Spirit to show them who needs that word from Him.

Games & Activities

#1 - For each family member, make a poster with their name at the top "JOANNA IS..." Write a new thing each day that identifies them. Write things that God has told you about them (or told them directly) - Rhema words - and things that the Bible says about them as a believer (see the Bible Readings section for ideas) - Logos words. Talk about each one with them. With older kids, talk about the difference between Rhema words that God has spoken over them and Logos words that are true for every believer.

#2 - Make a family poster that says "WE ARE..." and do the same thing as above for family identity. What has God said directly about our family or through his Word about our role in the world?

#3 - Gideon - 1. Go in a dark room with a flashlight. Wait a while then turn the light on and have everyone scream. If you weren’t the one holding the flashlight, how did you feel when it was turned on? Imagine how scared the Midianites were when the Israelites smashed those jars and yelled so loud. 2. Thoroughly soak a wash cloth, then squeeze it into a bowl. How much water did you get? Why did Gideon use a fleece to communicate with God? How did Gideon see himself? How did God see him? Are there areas of my life where God seems me differently than I see myself? (see Num 13:33)
